I Finally Let My Son Walk Home From School Alone For The Very First Time3

I never punished Eli for breaking the shortcut rule. Instead, I wrapped my arms around him so tightly that his backpack slipped onto the ground. Rosa hugged him next and could barely let go. When the officers arrived, they checked Mr. Albert and praised Eli for remaining calm. Mr. Albert simply looked at my son and asked whether he could pitch on Saturday. A week later, the police department presented Eli with a bravery certificate during a school assembly. That weekend, Rosa installed alarms on the doors, and Eli helped me hang an extra bell above her back entrance.

Eli still walks home alone, and now he follows every rule—with one special exception. Every Friday, with my permission, he stops at Rosa’s house to visit his old coach. Eli and Mr. Albert sit together on the porch, gently tossing a baseball back and forth. Some Fridays, Mr. Albert looks at him and remembers his name. Other Fridays, he simply calls Eli the best player on his team. My son never corrects him. He catches the ball, smiles, and tosses it back. No matter what Mr. Albert remembers that day, Eli always remembers him. And I learned that trusting my son was the right call.
