Nine days after he put a ring on my finger my fiancé shipped out 2

“You’re sorry?” I asked, staring at the man I had mourned for fifty-eight years. “You let me believe you were dead.” Danny explained that he had survived Vietnam, but terrible burns and memory loss left him confused and dependent on his family. His mother told him I deserved a normal life and claimed she had informed me he was gone. Later, when his memories returned, he wrote me a letter explaining everything. His mother found it and burned it. Shame about his injuries kept him from searching harder. “I was afraid you’d see what was left of me,” he admitted. “And I was a coward.” I told him he had no right to choose my future for me. His silence was the first honest answer he had given.

Danny eventually married Elaine, who helped him rebuild his life. They raised a daughter, Selena, far from Reno. Elaine had died years earlier, and Danny’s health was failing. He sent the flowers because he wanted to tell the truth before time ran out. I returned every Sunday with lemon cake, old photographs, and the ring he had given me. We spoke carefully at first, then openly. I told him about Ted, who knew about Danny and loved me without asking me to erase my past. Danny told me how Elaine had stood beside him through recovery. We understood that loving someone new did not cancel an earlier love, but it could not restore the years we had lost. When Selena joined us, she listened and suggested we travel to Ohio, where Danny’s death had been officially recorded. For once, I saw the frightened man behind the memories I had carried for decades.
