My Mother Banned Me From Her Birthday Because of My Baby Daughter, But Dad Revealed a Shocking Secret 2

When I opened it, my father stood in the hallway with snow covering his shoulders. He had driven six hours, and he looked exhausted. In his hands was an envelope. He didn’t even ask to come inside before saying, “It’s the six thousand for the roof.” I stared at him, confused, until he added something that made my stomach drop. “Kelsey, your mother didn’t write that birthday text.”

I invited him inside and settled Hazel in her crib before asking what he meant. Dad sat at my kitchen table and rubbed his hands together, struggling to find the words. He explained that my mother had never wanted to exclude Hazel from the birthday celebration. In fact, she had been excited about seeing her granddaughter. Someone else had sent the message from her phone, hoping to create a rift between us. Dad had only recently discovered the truth, and he had driven through the snow because he couldn’t bear letting me believe my mother had rejected us.

Then he told me who had sent it. My older sister, Vanessa, had borrowed Mom’s phone while helping her prepare for the party. She had always resented the attention Hazel received and feared that our mother would eventually leave the family home and savings to me because I needed more help as a single parent. Vanessa had wanted me to stay away from the birthday, believing that if I withdrew from the family, she would have more influence over our parents’ decisions.

Dad showed me messages he had discovered on Mom’s tablet. They revealed Vanessa discussing the plan with someone she trusted. The evidence was unmistakable. My mother had spent days wondering why I was angry with her, while I had been convinced she wanted nothing to do with my daughter. Dad apologized for not discovering the truth sooner. He handed me the envelope containing the money he had promised for the roof, explaining that he wanted to help without making me feel obligated to accept anything.
