Margaret ignored the call. Caroline then revealed that Robert had suspected Kevin years earlier, after his son pressured him to surrender power of attorney. Robert refused and secretly hired Caroline to protect Margaret. Before his death, he placed the cabin and his savings inside a trust controlled only by his wife. That meant Kevin’s forged documents were useless. Caroline had already contacted the buyer’s agent—and the police.

At ten the next morning, Margaret entered the real estate office wearing her red dress. Caroline sat beside her, while a plainclothes detective waited nearby. Kevin and Jessica arrived smiling and carrying folders. “Mom, we wanted to surprise you,” Kevin said casually. Margaret looked directly at him. “Who signed the check, Kevin?” His smile disappeared. Jessica lowered her eyes. The detective placed the forged check beside the listing agreement. “We can discuss that downtown,” he said.
