I handed the investigator a copy of the power of attorney Brittany had pressured me to sign. My attorney had already discovered a clause granting extraordinary control over my property if I became legally incapacitated. Suddenly, the planted medication and the suspicious paperwork seemed connected. Investigators questioned Brittany while I provided the original camera footage and explained everything I had witnessed. An hour later, my son Ethan arrived, shaken. “Mom, Brittany told me you were arrested,” he whispered. I explained what had happened. He stared at the evidence, then confessed that his wife had been telling him I was becoming forgetful and mentally unstable ever since I refused to sell my lakefront home. My heart broke. My own son had nearly believed a story designed to take away my independence.
Brittany emerged from questioning furious. “Your mother is manipulating everyone!” she shouted at Ethan. But when I revealed that my camera had recorded her entering my bedroom and opening my suitcase, her confidence vanished. “You spy on your own family?” she snapped. “I protect myself when someone gives me a reason,” I replied. Investigators subsequently obtained additional records and messages. They traced the stolen medication bottles to a pharmacy burglary involving Brittany’s cousin, who admitted supplying them. Other evidence supported allegations that Brittany had planned the airport discovery. Prosecutors brought charges, and my attorney uncovered messages showing that she had also approached a real estate investor about purchasing my property by portraying me as mentally incapable.
