Dad opened the folder and showed me a foreclosure notice. The family home was only thirty days away from being taken by the bank. Then he showed me several statements from an account I had never heard of. My stomach tightened when I recognized the deposits. They matched the exact amounts I had been sending every month, believing they were going toward the mortgage. But the account wasn’t Dad’s. It belonged to Rachel.
Dad said he had discovered the statements inside Mom’s desk after reading the cruel family messages. He had trusted Mom to manage the mortgage because she always promised everything was under control. The records showed thousands of dollars leaving Rachel’s account for purchases and payments to an unfamiliar business. I called Mom and demanded an explanation. She immediately became defensive, accusing me of invading her privacy. Then Dad looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “I thought you were saving our home. I didn’t know they were using you.”
