A Rich Couple Refused To Pay My Elderly Father For Painting Their Beautiful Lake House3

Dad told Ed to release the lien that same afternoon. He wasn’t interested in ruining the Whitakers’ sale or dragging the fight out after receiving what he was owed. Before leaving, he tipped his cap toward the buyers and casually told them that the third-floor trim was some of the finest work he had ever done. Then he climbed into his truck and drove away as though collecting $6,140 from people who had dared him to sue was just another item on his schedule. Eleven days later, the lake house sold.

The new owners hadn’t forgotten him. The following week, they called Dad and hired him to paint their boathouse. They paid half the price upfront and brought him lemonade every afternoon while he worked. When I finally asked why he had never told me about the lien, Ed, or any part of his plan, Dad simply shrugged. “Some folks think an old man runs out of time,” he said. “Truth is, he just learns not to waste it.” This spring, Dad finally hired someone to help him with the heavier work. He still refuses to rush. He still cuts every line by hand. And whenever someone asks him why he bothers keeping every signed change slip and completion form, he just smiles. The Whitakers once believed paperwork was something an old painter wouldn’t understand. In the end, one signature was all he needed.
