My Husband’s Final Wish Was to Donate His Organs, but the Secret He Left With His Doctor Changed Everything

“Wait! Please, don’t leave yet!” I was almost outside the hospital when Dr. Daniel Brooks came running toward me, holding something behind his back. My husband, Mark, had died that morning, and I was carrying his watch, wallet, and gray sweater in a plastic bag. I thought there was nothing left for me in that building except heartbreak. And when Dr. Brooks placed a small wooden box in my hands, I finally understood why my husband had insisted I must never leave the hospital empty-handed.
