My Nephew Sold Hunting Rights to My Late Husband’s 80 Acres—So I Was Waiting in the Deer Stand When His First Customers Arrived3

Marlene refused to repay Cody’s victims for him. Instead, Cody sold his new rifle scope and other equipment, took extra shifts, and prepared written apologies and repayment plans for all eleven groups. He admitted that he had lied without blaming his debts or childhood. Slowly, he repaid everyone. Months later, he asked permission to help repair Marlene’s fence and waited outside the locked gate until she personally opened it. That small gesture mattered. While they worked, Cody finally admitted that he had convinced himself unused land was somehow available to him. “But it wasn’t empty,” he said. “It was yours.”

By the following autumn, Cody had repaid the final hunter. Marlene eventually invited Cody and his mother, Linda, to walk the property. Beside the creek, Cody admitted he had believed inheriting Wes’s land would prove that Wes truly loved him. Marlene reminded him that Wes had already proven his love every time he taught Cody something, picked him up, or made room for him at the table. Cody later asked whether he could sit in Wes’s hunting stand again. “Not this season,” Marlene answered, but perhaps someday. Before leaving, Cody looked across the eighty acres and finally understood the lesson: loving something did not mean owning it. Marlene locked the gate after everyone left—not from anger, but because she had finally learned that love could include forgiveness without surrendering boundaries.
