When my daughter Rachel offered me her basement after my husband died, I thought it was an act of love. But after several months of sharing their home, I realized I needed my own space. It was from their bank, and the first line made my stomach tighten: they had received a foreclosure notice. I looked at Greg, wondering why he had hidden something so serious from his wife. Then Rachel whispered, “Mom, he didn’t ask you to move into our basement because of the kids. He asked because…” Greg interrupted her and reached into his jacket. “There’s another page,” he said. “Please read it before you decide what to do.”
