My Groom Never Showed Up To Our Wedding, So I Changed Out Of My Heels3

Lacey picked up the ring and walked toward Mrs. Pruett. “This was your mother’s,” she said softly. “It belongs with your family, not mine.” She placed it into the woman’s trembling hand anyway. Mrs. Pruett began to cry, but Lacey didn’t turn away. She invited her to stay for the reception, and eventually the older woman accepted a cup of coffee and sat beside Grandma Opal. At eight o’clock, they cut the cake together. The terrible secret had ruined the wedding plans, but it hadn’t ruined the kindness Lacey had chosen to show.

When the band began playing, Elmer crossed the floor in his brown wedding suit, bowed to eighty-nine-year-old Grandma Opal, and offered her the first wedding dance of her life. Daddy danced with Lacey afterward, her white sneakers squeaking across the VFW floor. Nobody left until midnight. Wesley entered a recovery program that winter and spent three years repaying his mother. Lacey never married him. Two years later, she married a kind man who showed up early to everything. Mrs. Pruett still sent Lacey a Christmas card every year, signed with love. And Grandma Opal danced at Lacey’s second wedding too, proving that one disastrous wedding day could still lead to a beautiful new beginning.
