I Married a Homeless Man Until His Final Letter Revealed the Truth 2

I carried the envelope inside and placed it on the kitchen table where Larry used to sit every morning with his coffee. For several minutes, I simply stared at it. I remembered how we had met, how other people had looked at him when they learned he was homeless, and how quickly they assumed they understood his entire life. Larry never begged for sympathy. He never demanded that anyone feel sorry for him. He wanted to be treated like a person, not a problem somebody needed to solve. When I married him, some people questioned my decision. They wondered why I would choose a man who had so little to offer. I never knew how to explain that the things Larry gave me could not be measured by money.

Eventually, I opened the envelope carefully. Inside was a folded letter written in his shaky handwriting. The first lines were exactly what I expected. He thanked me for the coffee, the conversations, the quiet evenings, and the way I had never made him feel ashamed of needing help. I had to stop reading because the words brought back too many memories at once. Then I reached the middle of the page, where his handwriting became uneven. He explained that there was something he had kept from me, not because he didn’t trust me, but because he had wanted our marriage to be real without anything else influencing it. My fingers tightened around the paper.

Larry wrote that he had spent years making sure nobody could define him by what he owned or what he had lost. He wanted me to know him without the distractions of money, possessions, or other people’s opinions. Then he asked me to look inside the small wooden box he had kept beneath his bed. I had seen that box countless times and never questioned it. He had always told me it contained old papers and things that no longer mattered. His final sentence made my heart race: “Before you decide what this means, please remember the man you married.” I folded the letter, walked to the bedroom, and pulled the box from beneath the bed.
