Daniel explained that he had discovered the property two months earlier through a customer at his auto shop. Curious about the connection to my grandmother, he contacted her attorney and obtained copies of the legal documents. He learned that Grandma had left me the house and money for taxes, repairs, and upkeep, but my parents had delayed the transfer and rented out the property while keeping the income. Daniel admitted he had wanted to tell me immediately but feared my family would accuse him of marrying me for money. I understood his concern, but I was still hurt. We had promised never to keep secrets from each other, and he had made that decision for me. Still, I knew we needed answers, so we drove straight to my parents’ house in our wedding clothes.
My mother went pale when I placed Grandma’s letter on the table. My father immediately blamed Daniel, accusing him of trying to destroy our family, but neither of my parents denied the documents. They claimed they had been protecting me because I was too young to manage a property. Before I could respond, Connor arrived. He admitted he knew my parents were managing assets belonging to me, then called the house a burden. I stared at him, realizing how easily my family had convinced me that financial security meant marrying someone wealthy. Nobody had cared that I loved Daniel or that he had always stood beside me when I needed him. I left my parents’ house with more questions than answers, knowing that the people I trusted most had hidden the truth for years.
