Merle explained exactly what making things right required. Russell would refund every dollar he’d taken from the three people he’d deceived, and every bale would be returned to my property by Sunday. Russell’s jaw tightened, but with Frank’s notebook and Merle’s testimony against his altered note, there wasn’t much left to argue about. Eventually, he nodded.
On Sunday, three trucks and two trailers rolled into my yard loaded with hay. Merle, Walt, and the young couple helped return all 187 bales while Caleb stacked them safely inside the barn. Russell personally repaid the buyers from his own pocket. When everything was finished, I gave one of my remaining pies to Walt and the other to the newlyweds. That winter, every one of my cows had plenty to eat. Frank’s little notebook remained on my kitchen shelf where I could see it each day. Russell had tried to use an old act of generosity against Frank’s final wishes, but he’d forgotten something important: tearing away a date could hide the truth for a while, but it couldn’t erase the people who remembered it.
