From the parking lot, I sent two messages. My attorney got the first: pause the bungalow transfer until I said otherwise. My parents got the second: the house was on hold, and I would explain when I was ready. Four hours later, Mom called breathless. She had already measured the bay window, while Dad had mentally chosen the perfect spot for his reading chair. I listened until she finished.
Then I told her I wasn’t angry. I was simply finished making decisions around everyone else’s comfort. The envelope would remain in my purse until I understood what I owed them—and what I didn’t.
