In January, I drove to her house with the envelope of receipts, not as a bill but as a record, and we sat at the dining table beside Dad’s chair. She apologized plainly, and so did Trevor. The next Christmas we rented nothing.
Everyone cooked at Mom’s, Megan made her own desserts, and Trevor set the photos on a timer. I arrived with nothing to organize, and Mom handed me a plate. Dad’s rule held at last: everybody who ate at the table helped clear it. That night, for the first time in ten Christmases, I sat down before dinner and was thanked.
