Trevor tried to explain himself, but every excuse sounded weaker than the evidence in front of him. Finally, he shrugged and claimed Mason was old enough to manage on his own. He accused me of exaggerating, insisting that I had always made ordinary situations seem worse than they were.

Then Caleb, standing beside the refrigerator, reached up and removed a small yellow note written in Mason’s careful handwriting.

“Dad said I can’t come. Please don’t be mad at Mom.”

 

 

Caleb read it slowly, then turned toward his father. Trevor had told both children that Mason had chosen to stay behind with a neighbor. Brooke began crying. Caleb asked why Mason always got the shoe dryer while he got the bicycle.

Trevor stood speechless.

The children were beginning to understand that their father had not simply made a poor decision. He had taught them to accept different rules for their brother and then hidden the truth from everyone. Their mother arrived two days later to take them home, and I watched the children leave knowing that the damage would take more than one conversation to repair.
