The moment I arrived, I realized the invitation had been a lie. My entire family was waiting inside. My father greeted me theatrically, my mother approached with tears in her eyes, and Mateo lifted his glass.
“Look who finally came back.”
I should have left immediately. Instead, I sat down and watched their intentions become clearer with every course. My father ordered wine worth more than five hundred dollars. Mateo requested extra lobster, my cousins ordered cocktails, and Aunt Rosalind entertained everyone with embarrassing childhood stories. Whenever I looked uncomfortable, my mother reminded me that the evening was about forgiveness.
“But we forgive you,” she said, resting her hand on my wrist.
That was when I understood. They hadn’t invited me to rebuild our relationship. They wanted me to accept their version of the past, pay for their extravagant evening, and prove that they could still make me obey.
When the black leather check folder arrived, I opened it and stared at the total: $5,142.38. Then I closed it and smiled.
My father’s expression hardened.
“What exactly is funny?”
