Inside the box was my husband’s watch.
Wren had given it to Odette, Margot’s mother, on the same day she delivered the dress. Along with it, she had included a note: This is worth something. Please use it for whatever Margot needs.
My husband had worn that watch every day for eleven years. When we sorted through his belongings, it was the one thing Wren had asked to keep. I had not searched for it in months, assuming it was safely tucked away in her room, where grief had placed so many things we rarely questioned.
Now I learned she had given it away for a girl she barely knew. Odette explained the rest while we stood on the porch, Margot beside her in a blue cardigan. Wren had noticed far more than I realized. She knew Margot’s school lunch account ran empty on Tuesdays, when Odette’s paycheck had not yet cleared. She knew Margot walked home alone because she was ashamed of where she lived.
