I closed my laptop, finished my tea, and walked three blocks back to my own front door. Helen Brooks stood beside her car with a county deputy, while I carried the manila folder from the shed beneath my arm. Inside my kitchen, seventeen relatives fell silent. Camille still held my emergency key between her fingers.
“Lorraine, we were just about to come get you,” she said.
“You won’t need to,” I replied. “I heard the entire plan from a hotel room. Every word.”
Helen placed the folder on the table where they had planned to sell my home. She explained that the property was protected by a trust, and no one could simply sign it away. Camille’s financing worksheet, her online posts about a mother-in-law “sitting on a gold mine,” and Garrett’s notes about my supposed memory problems told a disturbing story. The deputy asked who had been documenting my forgetfulness. Garrett opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
