I told the guests calmly that I had come because I was invited, and that I had sat exactly where I was placed. Brielle had gone pale, while Landon couldn’t meet my eyes. I explained that dinner would still be served to everyone because none of them had written the note that had hurt me. Then I looked at my son and told him I had never needed thanks for the $650. I had only needed a place at the table.
Landon quietly admitted that staying silent for five years had been easier than choosing me out loud. I told him I understood, but easier was a debt too, and someone always paid it. Then I walked to the banquet table and sat in the chair they had prepared for someone else. For the first time that evening, nobody asked me to move.
