At 9:45, the ballroom doors opened, and the general manager crossed the room with a leather folder beneath his arm. The servers I had worked beside for nearly two hours slowed as he looked across the tables. Then he asked one quiet question. “Is Mrs. Loretta Sutton of Sutton Linens & Laundry in this room?” Joanne laughed, then stopped when she realized he was looking directly at me. I untied my apron, folded it neatly as my mother had taught me, and placed it on a chair. “I’m here,” I said. The smugness disappeared from Joanne’s face.

 

 

The manager explained that every napkin, runner, and tablecloth in the ballroom came from my company, along with linens supplied to nine hotels across four counties. Then he opened the folder. Months earlier, I had privately arranged to cover the dessert, upgraded linens, and the three servers Joanne had cut to save money. I had asked that my name remain hidden.
