I told her it wasn’t. I signed the agreement and asked the staff to bring dessert to every table. Standing there, I thought about yellow-check cotton beneath a weak kitchen light, a stubborn zipper, and my mother’s hand covering her mouth. I had imagined that moment would feel like triumph. Instead, it felt quieter. I didn’t need anyone to applaud me. I only needed to know that I had become someone my younger self would recognize.

 

 

Joanne remained silent for a long moment before admitting she hadn’t known who I was. I gently told her that was exactly the point. She had never needed to know someone’s status, money, or name to treat them with kindness. She didn’t argue. Eventually, she picked up an empty tray and began helping the servers clear plates. I let her. Then Teddy Brooks found me near the coffee station, older now, and apologized for laughing at me at prom forty-five years earlier.
