Brielle had gone pale, and Landon would not meet my eyes. I told the room that dinner would be served to every guest, because none of them had written that note. Then I turned to my son and said I had never needed thanks for the $650, only a place at the table. He admitted, in a voice nobody else could hear, that staying silent for five years had been easier than choosing me out loud.
I said I understood, but easier was a debt too, and someone always paid it. Then I sat down in the banquet hall, at the head table, in the chair they had prepared for someone else.
