The stepmother arrived at the birthday dinner with a homemade cake no one had requested. The invitation had gone only to Dad, at Mom’s house, in the hope of avoiding the old trouble between the adults. The reaction at the door was immediate. This was not really the right place for her. Tonight was for immediate family. She did not argue. She set the cake on the table, said happy birthday, and turned to leave. Maybe you can still share it later, she said. The comment was dismissed as another attempt to stay included.
Dinner was quieter than usual. Dad, normally the loudest storyteller, pushed food around his plate. The tension eased enough for old stories and a few laughs. When dessert came, Mom said the cake should not go to waste. The knife hit something hard. A small envelope slid onto the plate, and the table went still.
