Before we could walk away, the server hurried outside and quietly handed me a folded receipt. I opened it and found one word written across it: “PAID.” Someone inside had covered our entire dinner without saying a word. I looked back through the restaurant window, trying to figure out who had done it, but every table looked ordinary.
I thanked the server, though I had no idea who deserved the gratitude. Then I looked at Claire. Her eyes were wide, but she wasn’t laughing or looking embarrassed. She seemed genuinely moved.
