Harlan opened the leather folder and slid one page across the table to Dalton. “You are right that rights matter,” he said. “Please read paragraph six.” It was the sentence Dalton had demanded six years earlier to protect his finances. It stated that the Matthews land was Raymond’s separate property and that no family member had any claim, lien, or expectation to it. Raymond alone could decide what happened to it. Dalton read the paragraph, began to speak, then stopped. The words he had once written to protect himself were now blocking every claim he wanted to make.
Harlan explained that I had placed the land into a trust, guaranteeing my care for life while naming Marissa trustee and sole beneficiary. Ridgeline’s offer would be negotiated through the trust, not through me. Lorraine called it unfair, saying Dalton had only protected the family. I quietly told her he had protected his own money, which was his right, and I was now doing the same with mine.
