Jenna arrived within the hour without asking me to be brave. She photographed my wrist and scalp, drove me to urgent care, and stayed beside me while a nurse carefully recorded everything I said. At dawn, I returned home alone. Daniel unlocked the kitchen door so I could begin cooking, and I made only one thing: a plain pot of chicken soup. At noon, twenty-six guests sat around the table while Margaret wore the blouse I had paid for. I placed the soup in front of her. “It’s the only feast I owe anyone.”
Then I pressed play. Daniel’s voice filled the room, followed by Margaret’s unmistakable laughter behind the locked door. Nobody moved. Her sister from Columbus went pale. Daniel reached for my phone, but a colleague of Jenna’s stepped between us. I calmly said I was leaving, the mortgage papers were with my attorney, and the recording already existed in three safe places.
