Brenda found a job at a grocery chain within two weeks, because rent does not negotiate. My parents stopped calling for a month. Then a letter arrived in my father’s careful handwriting. He admitted that he had measured fairness by who complained loudest, and that I had been punished for never complaining.
He did not ask me to come back. He asked whether he could visit, and whether I would be willing to let him start over as a guest.
