Months later, I arrived at five o’clock, carrying only a bottle of wine, as a guest. Ella pulled me upstairs to find a missing doll shoe, and this time we found it together, laughing. Olivia handed me a glass and said, “Sit.” When the dishes came, Michael carried them to the sink, and Colleen, to my quiet surprise, picked up a dish towel.
I stayed in my chair and listened to the water run. Being needed is not the same as being welcome, and I finally knew which one I wanted.
