The phone was Michael. I let it ring twice, then answered from the driver’s seat with the engine off and his porch light small at the end of the block. “Mom, where are you? The dishes are still in the sink.” He did not ask whether I was all right. I told him I was in my car, that I was fine, and that the plates would keep until morning. I said I had loved every Sunday I was invited to, and that somewhere along the way I had stopped being invited and started being scheduled. The line went quiet for a long time.
Then I told him the rest, evenly, the way you read a receipt. The sofa. The $650 on the first Monday of every month, which I had kept sending long after he found steady work because stopping had felt cruel. I did not say it to accuse him. I said, “Since you’re already here is a sentence that only works on someone who never gets to leave.” He admitted he hadn’t realized. I believed him, and I told him that was exactly the problem: I had made it so easy not to notice. He asked if he could come see me. I said, “Tomorrow, and bring the children.”
