Gordon left with his folder, and the escrow money was returned within the week. Susan filed my petition the following morning, and before noon, a locksmith had changed every lock in the house. Nathan and Loretta gathered their belongings that evening without much conversation. Before leaving, Nathan placed one hundred and fifty dollars on the coffee table without being asked. I waited until they were gone before picking it up. Then I gave every dollar to the diaper bank down the road. A lender’s inquiry followed, but I didn’t wait to learn how it ended. I had a newborn to feed and a house that finally felt safe enough to sleep in.

 

 

For the first time, the rooms felt different. There was no wondering what Nathan had signed, what he had hidden, or whether someone might try to take away the place my father had left me. Susan handled the legal work while I focused on my daughter. I kept the timeline she had prepared in a folder beside the deed, not because I wanted to relive everything, but because I wanted to remember exactly how close I had come to losing something that had always legally been mine.
