I told Garrett to close the check to the house account, something I had always planned to do. I signed the receipt as calmly as I signed every check at that table, placed it back inside the folder, and looked at him. “The evening is my gift to Coralie. I hope you enjoyed it.”
Silence filled the room. Vivienne quickly called it a lovely gesture, clearly trying to understand what had just happened. Garrett said nothing. My mother stared at the tablecloth. Coralie looked at me with an expression I had not seen since she was fourteen and needed me in the middle of the night. It was recognition mixed with shame.
