The man hesitated on the porch as though he expected me to change my mind. Instead, I led him inside, locked the door, and prepared something warm to eat. His name was Daniel. He told me that his marriage had fallen apart, followed by a job loss during layoffs. What began as temporary hardship gradually became years without stable housing. He slept behind a shopping center, showered at a gym whenever he could, and carefully counted coins before buying anything. He remembered having a house and a yard, but he spoke about that life as though it belonged to someone else. Before leaving, I packed leftovers and gave him a clean jacket.
