Diane moved into the apartment two weeks later. The first Sunday, I returned her casserole dish clean, and she invited me to dinner as a guest.
I slept in the master bedroom that night, windows open to the water. The fern, forgotten on the porch, is thriving. Some evenings I water it and think how little strength it took, in the end, to stand still and let the truth do the work.
