Priscilla left first, and I did not stop her. Russell stayed, and for a long while we sat with the rain and the cooling tea. He told me he had stopped hearing me years ago, that he had mistaken my help for weather, something that simply fell.
I told him I had taught him that, and that I was sorry for my part. Then I told him the money would not be returning, but the door would stay open. Those were separate things, and I needed him to learn the difference. My granddaughter fell asleep against my arm, still wearing her raincoat.
