The funds were recovered within the week, and the bank investigator told us the freeze had happened just in time. Gary was charged, and seeing my name on the charge sheet beside the words he had typed made my stomach turn. Grandpa sat beside me outside the magistrate’s office, his gray wool coat folded carefully over his knee. He admitted he had suspected something when my father suddenly insisted on helping with the online verification. A man who had never once offered to take Grandpa to the bank had suddenly wanted to be involved.
Grandpa said he had stayed quiet because he wanted to be wrong. I thought about all the winters I had rationed the heat, the extra shifts I worked, and my mother repeatedly telling me that family simply did not discuss money. I had believed her.
