She had tried to transfer the deed into Coralie’s name. A quitclaim deed with a forged signature had been filed on a Tuesday afternoon, when Marguerite believed I was working a catering job three counties away. But the county clerk flagged the document as irregular and held it for verification. My attorney, Delgado, had already been monitoring the property records for six weeks, which was how we discovered what she had attempted.
The deed never recorded. The house never left my name. Legally, nothing changed except the evidence of what Marguerite had been willing to do. At my grandson’s fifth birthday party, the photograph of the forged document sat on the table when everything finally came apart.
