The first sign was my name on a folder that vanished the moment I entered accounting. Then came the lawyer’s calls, the whispered conversations, and finally Richard, my seventy-eight-year-old boss, telling me, “Be downstairs at four. Just you and me.” For an entire week, dread followed me everywhere. I had worked beside Richard for years and helped keep the company standing through difficult seasons, so every strange glance made me believe I was about to be pushed aside.
When Richard asked me to meet him at a park, my imagination took over completely. I pictured myself carrying a cardboard box out of the office while security collected my badge and keys. By Friday afternoon, I was certain I had lost my job. Richard was already waiting on a bench when I arrived.
