Spring came, and the lodge filled again with hikers and quiet couples. I kept Eleanor’s staff, her recipes, and the youth program she had loved, and I added a scholarship in her name. My father still has not called, and I have made peace with that silence. Some doors close for good, and some simply wait.
The brass keys hang by the front desk now, where every guest can see them, and I finally understand what she meant. Home is not what you inherit. It is what you are brave enough to keep open.
