In Italy she kept the distance she had promised herself. She ate breakfast early, took the tours she had marked, and returned to her own room when the day was done. She saw the grandchildren in the lobby and on one afternoon walk.
She did not take the night shifts, the nap schedule, or the hours the parents had planned to hand off. They hired the nanny after all. The arrangement was colder than a shared vacation, and it was also clear.
