What The Toxicology Report Actually Found, And The Part Of This Story I Have Never Told Anyone Until Now

The chocolates were not poisoned. That is the truth I have to start with, because the version everyone retells ends with sirens and handcuffs and a confession to a 911 operator, and none of that is what happened.

 

 

What the toxicology report found, when the police tested the remaining eight truffles at my request, was chocolate. Expensive chocolate, gold dust, raspberry filling, exactly what the label said. Desmond had not poisoned anything. He had simply panicked when he heard I gave them away, because he had paid over four hundred dollars for them and the entire gift had been intended for me alone, not as harm but as an apology he did not know how to say out loud.
