I laid out the deed, the rental records, and the letter from Harold Bennett’s attorney. I explained that for twelve years the property had paid quietly into accounts neither of them knew existed, and that I had stayed silent because a good man once asked me to watch how people treated me when they believed I had nothing. Rachel said I had hidden it.
I said I had simply waited. Daniel looked at the table for a long while, then at his wife, and asked her how many relatives she had told that I was forgetful. She had no answer. I told her I remembered every word.
