The petition reached the court before Peter’s truck even reached his mother’s driveway. Everything he had carried out that morning was already listed in my inventory, and most of it was documented as purchased from my accounts, not his. The sectional, dining table, bedroom set, and espresso machine were all there, each matched to a receipt, serial number, and bank record in my name. The house itself had never belonged to him either. I had bought it two years before our wedding. His lawyer called within the week, and for the first time, his voice sounded careful. Peter had taken a home full of furniture, but he had also taken a pile of evidence.
The messages in my folder completed the picture. Eleanor had written about moving everything on a weekday, telling me nothing, and hiding the promotion bonus before divorce papers appeared. Peter had agreed to every part of it. When the judge read the messages, I didn’t need to raise my voice. I had spent nine years making room for them.
