The messages were real, but they were old. Two years earlier, before any of this happened, I had sent Margot a photo of the listing when I was still dreaming about buying the place. Beneath it, I had written, “Imagine if I bought this, you could all come anytime.” She had screenshotted the message, saved it, and eventually flown to the Bahamas treating it like a promise. What she had conveniently removed was one word: imagine.
I stood at my own gate and made a decision I still think about. I let them inside. The screenshot meant nothing legally, but Margot’s two children were standing in the heat with suitcases, and they had nothing to do with ten years of family tension, exclusion, and borrowed keychains.
