Dad didn’t shout. Instead, he called an old friend from his warehouse days, Mr. Okafor, who had since become a family attorney, and put him on speaker in my kitchen. In a calm, steady voice, Mr. Okafor explained that redirecting a wife’s wages without her consent was not a family matter. It was a matter of record, and the bank’s records were already waiting. My husband stopped laughing halfway through the call. He lowered himself into the chair he had ignored all week and stared at the table without saying a word.
Then Dad crouched beside my son. “Want to come stay with Grandpa? I make the good pancakes.” My boy nodded, clutching his toy truck against his chest. Dad lifted his jacket from the chair and wrapped it around the little red hoodie.
