I went inside and came back with two old towels from my hall closet and handed them to Brenda. I told her kindly that I would not be driving Lucy anymore, and that I hoped the insurance would be quick. She opened her mouth, looked at the towels, and for once had nothing to say.
Lucy appeared behind her mother in a borrowed jacket. Grace walked out and gave her friend the spare umbrella without being asked. They shared it all the way to the bus stop at the end of the block.
