Sunday came and went, and I didn’t return. I sent one calm message: I would continue helping Mom with her health when she could speak kindly to my children, and not before. The silence lasted three weeks. Jenna called twice, first furious, then confused, and finally exhausted. Mom’s pill organizer sat half empty, and the Tuesday ride I normally provided never came.

 

 

Then my father arrived alone on a cold evening, his hat resting between his hands. He admitted that he had watched that plate move across the table and said nothing, just as he had stayed silent for years. He apologized directly to Lila and Theo, kneeling so he could meet their eyes. Theo listened for a moment before asking if Grandpa wanted to see the trick with his coat zipper. Dad smiled. He stayed for soup.
