Twenty minutes later, Lauren set her glass down too carefully. She blinked twice and said the room felt warm. Trevor kept talking, but his eyes were fixed on her hands instead of the conversation. When she reached for her bag and missed it, I knew the waiter had been right about the glass—and I had been right about the switch. I quietly signaled the young man, told him to bring the manager, and ordered him to leave the original glass untouched. Then I called an ambulance myself.
Trevor panicked immediately. He insisted Lauren only needed air and accused me of overreacting. Then he lifted his phone as though he wanted to record everything. That was when I understood there was more to the plan. Later, at the coat check, the manager found Trevor’s jacket. Inside was a folder that police took away.
