My hands began shaking as I turned the photograph over. A handwritten message covered the back: “Forgive me, Rose. She can’t know.” Beside the photograph was a phone number and a name—Rose. Suddenly, memories I had ignored for years seemed connected. Why had Richard hidden this photograph? Why had he lied about the tattoo? And most frightening of all, why was Rose holding a newborn who appeared to be our daughter?
I called the number before fear could convince me otherwise. An older woman answered, and when I introduced myself, there was a long silence. Instead of sounding surprised, she quietly said she had wondered when someone would eventually find the photograph. Rose asked me to meet her at a small diner. I arrived nervous, expecting an explanation that might completely change what I knew about my marriage and Claire’s beginning.
Rose finally told me that she had worked as a NICU nurse when Richard and his family were going through an incredibly difficult period. She had cared for Claire as a newborn and had spent time helping Richard navigate the overwhelming emotions surrounding his daughter’s arrival. She remembered how frightened and exhausted he had been, and how desperately he wanted his child to be safe. Her compassion stayed with him long after they left the hospital.
